I just have to say that FileBoss (from
www.theutilityfactory.com) truly rocks.
With my icons (www.aceicons.com),
I deal with a LOT of files. Let's do the
math... for the Roma icons, I have:
1 PSD master
2 ICOs (plain, shadowed)
10 GIFS (5 sizes, plain & shadowed)
10 BMPs
10 PNGs
So, that's 33 files for each image. In the
Roma set, I currently have 258 images...
that's 8514 files. Not so bad.
But the Ace style...
4 masters
2 ICOs (plain, shadowed)
8 GIFs (4 sizes, plain & shadowed)
8 BMPs
8 PNGs
x 10 different colors!
So that's 300 files for each image, and I
have 164 images. That's 49,200 files.
Plus Roma's 8514, that's 57,714 image files
that I have to deal with (for now, I add new
ones every few months)... in a lot of
different folders.
Today I decided that I needed to rename some
of the Roma images. Instead of
"left-arrow", "right-arrow", they should be
"arrow-green-left", "arrow-green-right",
etc. Can you imagine doing that in all the
different folders I have the icons organized
into?
But wait, it gets worse. Here are the
actual file names:
RO-Mx1-16_left-arrow.PNG
RO-Mx2-32_right-arrow.PNG
etc.
This would be almost impossible to do -
very, very time consuming and tedious - if
it wasn't for FileBoss. Today, I finally
used "file sets" for the first time... and
what a breeze it was!
I created a file set by bringing up the
folder tree in the special file set window.
I checked all the "Roma" folders (so that
FileBoss could ignore the 49,200 files in
the "Ace" folders), and said "make a file
set!". So then FileBoss took just a few
seconds, and created a list of all the files
in all those different folders.
Now, I could run my renames to my hearts
content. I just did a "Ctrl-A" to select all
(only once), then "Ctrl-R" to bring up the
most wonderful, versatile rename window
you've ever seen. I have done a lot of
interesting and crazy renames while messing
with all these icon files, and there has not
been one, not one, rename that FileBoss
couldn't handle.
Before FileBoss, I would have had to write
scripts (or do it by hand) to do some of the
renames I have to do regularly. Now, no
problem.
FileBoss rocks. File sets are awesome.
